How NOT to laminate layers of technical textiles.

Field Notes

While trying to laminate 5 layers of newly created textiles into a single-layer aviation blanket, our team became experts in what doesn’t work. They tried well over 100 different approaches that “failed.” (See our 9/24/20 blog post for why laminating is so important.)

Field Notes

They tried different glues, different amounts of glue, different facing fabrics, different backing fabrics, in dozens of different combinations. And it wasn’t just about successful lamination - the blanket had to remain water repellant, fire resistant, highly air-permeable, and inherently anti-static.

Fortunately it was a team of innovators. They knew that the path to success is riddled with so-called “failures.” Don’t get us wrong … they were frustrated at times, and even discouraged once in awhile, but they were fueled by what all innovators are fueled by - the thrill of the chase.

Each iteration was subject to deep analysis and problem-identification. We learned something with every try and came closer to a solution with every step. Eventually, the team created a game-changing, patented textile that not only modernized aviation blankets, it revolutionized them.

Field Notes

Innovation isn’t easy, and it it takes patience and resilience, but it’s also incredibly rewarding - and the harder something is to do, the more rewarding success is. (People in the military know that better than anyone.)
