Block II Chinooks to include advanced blanket system from Cocoon.

Block II Chinook’s coming off the line will be outfitted with Cocoon’s Improved Thermal Acoustic Blanket (ITAB). This modernized blanket system features technical textiles that reduce weight by a remarkable 140+ lbs. per aircraft while also protecting against corrosion.

Inclusion on Block II represents a natural next step for ITAB. First adopted by U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), the breakthrough blanket system has proven its value across more than 200 MYII Chinooks currently in service.

According to Cocoon CEO Amy Coyne, “ITAB is major step forward in the modernization of thermal acoustic blankets. It reduces weight, protects against corrosion, improves mission capability, and extends asset lifecycles – which is why it has become a blanket of choice on Chinooks.”

At the core of ITAB’s patented innovation is a sophisticated multilayer membrane design. This unique structure prevents heat and moisture buildup against the airframe, dramatically lowering the risk of corrosion.

In addition to being lightweight and air-permeable, the ITAB is hydrophobic (won’t absorb water), oleophobic (repels oils, lubricants, and fuels), and inherently anti-static (safe to use with fuels and ordnance). There’s also a redesigned attachment system that eliminates the need for 550 cord, improving safety and streamlining maintenance.

“It took many years of R&D to develop and refine the unique characteristics of ITAB,” said Cocoon founder Leo “Chip” Crotty. “We had to find just the right textiles for each layer and bring them together in a single laminated blanket that would be lightweight, air-permeable, durable, fire retardant, and much more. The result is advanced technology in the form of a textile.”
