Three major ways our modernized aviation blanket improves the CH-47

1. It saves a significant amount of weight.

Right out of the box Cocoon’s Improved Thermal Acoustic Blanket (ITAB) is 60 lbs. lighter than the old blanket. More importantly, it’s 140+ lbs. lighter after use. That’s because it doesn’t gain any weight, while the old blankets keep gaining weight as they absorb liquids. Considering the measures that have been taken to save even ounces on the CH-47, that kind of dramatic weight reduction is a true game changer.

2. It is highly air-permeable, which prevents mold, mildew, and corrosion.

Cocoon’s ITAB features a highly advanced membrane that keeps moisture from getting trapped against the airframe. As a result, no moisture can collect between the blanket and the airframe to cause mold, mildew, or corrosion.

3. It won’t absorb moisture, oils, lubricants, fluids, or fuels that can contaminate the blanket and add weight.

Cocoon’s ITAB is both hydrophobic (repels water) and oleophobic (repels fluids). It will neither gain weight from absorption, nor will it become contaminated. As the old blankets absorb fluids they get heavier and heavier and there’s no way to rid them of those contaminants. Over time they get so heavy that 550 cord is often required to keep them in place, and they become more and more contaminated.

Making Cocoon’s ITAB lightweight, air-permeable, hydrophobic, and oleophobic took years of painstaking R&D, but the end result hasn’t just modernized aviation blankets, it’s revolutionized them.
