How to reduce strain on the INDOPACOM supply chain.

INDOPACOM is an enormous challenge when it comes to logistics and supply chains. One reason is that INDOPACOM itself is enormous. It encompasses 100 million square miles equalling 52% of the earth’s surface. That’s five times the size of the U.S. European Command.

Another challenge is its distance from mainland United States. For example, Guam is 6,000 miles from San Diego. In addition, INDOPACOM is spread out across the Pacific Ocean, covering two continents and thousands of islands.

To further complicate matters, the region includes an adversary with the willingness and ability to impede and/or delay the movement of materiel (a.k.a. “contested logistics”).

Finally, the region includes extremely corrosive environments, greatly increasing the likelihood of needing a steady supply of replacement equipment, parts, and many other goods.

So how can the DoD be proactive and preemptively reduce strains on the supply chain? By investing in corrosion-free environments which can eliminate the need for replacement equipment, parts, and other goods.

By way of example, one of our DoD customers was losing 15%-20% of costly warehoused aircraft parts annually. After installing a corrosion-free environment, their parts loss fell to 0%. The facility paid for itself in a matter of months.

Given all the logistics challenges facing the U.S. Military in INDOPACOM, corrosion-free environments should be utilized to the fullest extent possible in order to:

  • Relieve stress on the supply chain

  • Maintain readiness

  • Reduce costs (replacement costs, transportation costs, opportunity costs)

  • Reduce maintenance man-hours

With all that’s at stake in the region, every ounce of prevention will be worth far more than a pound of cure.
